Paronychia: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  • Throbbing pain, redness, warmth and swelling in the skin around a nail
  • Pus-filled blisters
  • Red, hot, swollen, painful nail fold
  • Pus coming out of your nail fold when you press on it
  • Nail that pulls away from your nail fold and may fall off
  • Changes in nail color, such as green nails
  • Thick, rough nail, or ridges in the nail

Causes

Paronychia is fairly common. It is usually caused by injury to the area for example, from biting off or picking a hangnail or from trimming or pushing back the cuticle.
  • Bacterial paronychia is caused by bacteria
  • Candidal paronychia is caused by a specific type of yeast
  • Fungal paronychia is caused by a fungus
