Menorrhagia: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

Symptoms of menorrhagia include:                                     
  • Heavy blood loss during the menstrual period
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods
  • Cramping and pain in the lower abdomen
  • Weakness, tiredness, Shortness of breath

Causes

There are many possible causes of heavy menstrual bleeding. They include:
  • Hormonal imbalance (mainly estrogen and progesterone)
  • Fibroids or noncancerous tumours of the uterus
  • Miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy
  • Use of blood thinners
  • Problems with a non-hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) used for birth controlÿ
  • Uterine problems like Adenomyosis, Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Other medical conditions that can prevent normal blood clotting, including liver, kidney, or thyroid disease, and bleeding or platelet disorders
