COPD: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

The main symptoms are:
  • A long-lasting (chronic) cough
  • Mucus (white, yellow or greenish) that comes up when you cough
  • Shortness of breath that gets worse when you exercise
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Blueness of the lips or fingernail beds (cyanosis)
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Lack of energy
  • Unintended weight loss (in later stages)

Causes

Main risk factors for COPD
  • Tobacco smoking
  • Indoor air pollution (such as biomass fuel used for cooking and heating)
  • Outdoor air pollution
  • Occupational dusts and chemicals (vapours, irritants, and fumes)
