Symptoms

Polio can lead to paralysis. Many people who are infected with virus do not become sick
  • General discomfort
  • Headache
  • Red throat
  • Slight fever
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting
Non-paralytic polio symptoms
  • Back pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Irritability
  • Leg pain
  • Moderate fever
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Muscle tenderness and spasms
  • Skin rash
  • Neck pain
  • Vomiting
Paralytic polio symptoms
  • Fever 5-7 days before other symptoms
  • Bloating
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty in urination
  • Excess salivation
  • Abnormal sensations
  • Muscle pain and weakness
  • Irritability
  • Sensitivity to touch (mild touch will be painful)
  • Stiff neck 
  • Swallowing difficulty

Causes

Polio is caused by infection with the polio virus. The virus spreads by
  • Direct person to person
  • Contact with the infected mucus from nose or mouth
  • Contact with the infected faeces
