Hypothyroidism: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  The following are symptoms for hypothyroidism:
  • Weight gain                                                   
  • Fatigue
  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty in learning
  • Drowsiness
  • Pale dry skin, brittle hair and nails
  • A puffy face
  • Frequent, heavy menstrual periods
  • Hoarse voice
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Constipation
  • Muscle weakness
In addition to these symptoms, people may have high blood levels of LDL cholesterol. This is called as "bad" cholesterol.

Causes

 There are many causes for hypothyroidism. They are
  • Iodine deficiency, stress
  • Hashimoto thyroiditis (painless disease of the immune system that is hereditary).
  • Postpartum thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland after pregnancy)
  • Acute thyroiditis
  • Thyroid hormone resistance
  • Medications that affect thyroid function
  • Cold or other respiratory infection
  • Radiation treatments to the neck or brain to treat different cancers
  • Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland
  • Treatment for hyperthyroidism
