Barrets Esophagus: Symptom and Causes


Barretts oesophagus signs and symptoms are usually related to acid reflux and may include:
  • Frequent heartburn
  • Difficulty and painful swallowing food
  • Chest pain
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Dry cough
Many people with Barretts oesophagus have no signs or symptoms.


Long-term GERD is the primary risk factor. Your risk of having acid reflux is higher if you  
  • Are overweight
  • Smoke
  • Drink large amounts of alcohol
  • Eat spicy or fatty foods
