Olecranon Bursitis: Prevention and Complications

Prevention Tips

  • Do your stretches and strengthen your muscles. Warm up or stretch before physical activity
  • Take frequent breaks from repetitive tasks
  • Cushion your joint. Use elbow pads. Avoid resting your elbows on hard surfaces
  • Practice good posture. For example, avoid leaning on your elbows

Watch Out

An abscess, or area of pus, may form on the elbow. If the infection is not treated quickly, the abscess may even begin to drain pus.

  • Thickness and swelling over the back of the elbow
  • Small tender lumps underneath the elbow
  • Pain, redness and tenderness behind the elbow
