Meningitis: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

For older than 2 years of age
  • Stiff neck
  • Sudden high temperature
  • Vomiting or nausea with headache
  • Confusion
  • Lack of interest in eating and drinking
  • Skin rashes sometimes
  • Sleepiness
  • Rapid breathing
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Light and sound sensitivity
  • Cold hands and feet
For age less than 2 years
  • High fever 
  • Constant crying
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Irritability
  • Poor feeding
  • Stiff neck
  • Bulge in the soft spot on top of a baby?s head
  • Pale skin
  • Breathing difficulty
Meningitis Symptoms

Causes

  • Meningitis is generally caused by infection of viruses (major), bacteria, fungi, parasites, and certain organisms. 
  • Anatomical defects or weak immune systems may be linked to recurrent bacterial meningitis.
  • Drug allergies
  • Diseased conditions (like cancer and other inflammatory disorders)
For children less than 2 years
  • Brain or spinal cord surgery
  • Head injury
  • Kidney failure
  • Use of corticosteroids
  • Abnormal immune system
