Causes

  • Whooping cough is caused by a bacterium called Bordetella pertussis. The bacteria spread from person to person through tiny drops of fluid from an infected person s nose or mouth. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, tiny germ-laden droplets are sprayed into the air and breathed into the lungs of anyone who happens to be nearby.
  • Infected people are most contagious during the earliest stages of the illness for up to about 2 weeks after the cough begins.
