Pediatric Cradle Cap: Meaning, Diagnosis and Overview

What is Pediatric Cradle Cap?

Cradle cap is the common name for infantile seborrheic dermatitis. If your babys scalp has flaky, dry skin that looks like dandruff, or thick, oily, yellowish or brown scaling or crusting patches, it is cradle cap. It is a very common condition.
It usually occurs on the scalp, but can also appear on the face, ears and neck, or in skin folds, such as at the back of the knees and armpits.

Recovery Time

Mild cradle cap usually gets better without treatment after a few weeks. It can come back, even when treated properly, because the glands continue to produce sebum for several months after birth. Cradle cap is rarely a serious condition.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cradle cap is done by physical examination.
