Panniculitis: Meaning, Diagnosis and Overview

What is Panniculitis?

Panniculitis is an inflammation of the panniculus, which is the fibro-fatty tissue layer that lies underneath the outermost or superficial layers of our skin.It usually affects the shins and calves, but may spread to the thighs, forearmsand chest. It is usually seen in women.

Recovery Time

The condition tends to clear up within six weeks, fading like a bruise, usually without scarring. When the inflammation has settled, a depression in the skin may be left, which can be temporary or permanent.

Diagnosis

Panniculitis is diagnosed by a combination of clinical features, biopsy findings and microbiological culture. Sometimes other investigations are necessary.
