BENZOIN

Overview

BENZOIN is a Schedule H drug.

Benzoin is the sap (gum resin) of trees that belong to theStyrax species. Don’t confuse benzoin with Siam benzoin (Styrax tonkinensis), which is used only in manufacturing and not as a medicine.
People take benzoin by mouth  forswelling (inflammation) of the throat and breathing passages.
Some people apply it directly to the skin to kill germs, reduce swelling, and stop bleeding from small cuts. Benzoin is also used topically for skin ulcers, bedsores, and cracked skin. In combination with other herbs (aloe, storax, and tolu balsam), benzoin is used as a skin protectant. This combination is known as “compound benzoin tincture.”

Precautions

  • Tell all of your health care providers that you take benzoin tincture. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
  • Thismedicine may catch on fire. Do not use near an open flame or while smoking.
  • This medicine may cause harm if swallowed. Ifbenzoin tincture is swallowed, call a doctor or poison control center right away.
  • Follow howto use as you have been told by the doctor or read the package insert.
  • If benzointincture gets in the eyes, rinse with a lot of water. If eye irritation lasts for a while, talk with the doctor.
  • Dry thearea where you will be putting benzoin tincture.
  • Put on theulcer using a clean cotton swab.
  • If yoursymptoms or health problems do not get better or if they become worse, call your doctor.
  • Do not share your drugs with others and donot take anyone else’s drugs. Talk with the doctor before starting any new drug, including prescription or OTC, natural products, or vitamins.
