DOLASETRON MESYLATE

Overview

DOLASETRON MESYLATE is a Schedule H drug.
This medication is a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, prescribed for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy.  It blocks serotonin’s action that may cause nausea and vomiting. Before starting this medication, tell your doctor if you have had heart rhythm problems, especially long QT syndrome. This medication comes in tablet and injectable forms. The tablet is taken by mouth within one hour before chemotherapy. The injectable form is given by IV (into the vein) during surgery.

Precautions

  • It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption.
  • Avoid excess dosage.
  • Before taking dolasetron, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or to other anti-nausea serotonin blockers (such as granisetron, ondansetron) or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of stomach/intestinal problems (such as ileus, swelling), kidney disease.
  • Dolasetron may cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). QT prolongation can rarely cause serious fast/irregular heartbeat and other symptoms (such as severe dizziness, fainting) that need medical attention right away.
  • Children with heart problems may be more sensitive to side effects of this drug, especially irregular heartbeat.
  • During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
