Overview

VALGANCICLOVIR is a Schedule H drug.
Valganciclovir is an antiviral drug. It works by preventing viral cells from multiplying in your body. Valganciclovir is used in adults to prevent infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) that may occur after an organ transplant (heart, kidney, or pancreas). Valganciclovir is also used to treat CMV infection of the eye in adults with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Valganciclovir is used in children at least 4 months old to prevent CMV infection after a kidney transplant. Valganciclovir is also used in children at least 1 month old to prevent CMV disease after a heart transplant.

Precautions

  • You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to valganciclovir or ganciclovir (Cytovene).
  • Valganciclovir can harm an unborn baby. Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy, whether you are a man or a woman. Men should use condoms. The use of this medicine by either parent may cause birth defects.
  • This medicine may affect fertility (ability to have children) in both men and women. However, it is important to use birth control to prevent pregnancy because valganciclovir may harm the baby if a pregnancy does occur.
  • Drink plenty of liquids while you are taking valganciclovir.
  • Do not crush or break a valganciclovir tablet. The medicine from a crushed or broken pill can be dangerous if it gets in your eyes or on your skin.
  • Valganciclovir tablets are for adults or children, but valganciclovir liquid is only for children. Adults should not use the oral solution or the dose may not be correct.
  • Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
  • This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.
  • Wash your hands well to prevent the spread of infection. Avoid contact with people who have infections that may spread to others (such as chickenpox, measles, flu).
  • Older adults may be at greater risk for kidney problems while using this drug.

Symptoms of Overdosage

VALGANCICLOVIR over-dosage can result in: Dark Colored (brown) Urine, Difficulty Urinating

VALGANCICLOVIR : Skin Rash, Dry Skin, Itchy Skin, Hives, Black (tar) Colored Stools, Chills, Cough, Dizziness, Fever, Head Headache, Lower Back Pain, Nervousness, Pain With Urination, Pale Skin, Throat Soreness, Fatigue (tiredness), Weakness (generalized), Confusion, Runny Nose, Slow Thinking

Serious Side-Effects

VALGANCICLOVIR : Blood Or Red Colored Urine, Bloody Or Red Colored Stools, Eyes Blurred Vision, Shortness Of Breath, Rapid Heart Rate (pulse), Slow Heart Rate (pulse), Slow Or Irregular Breathing, Seizures (uncontrollable Jerking Of Limbs)

Food Interactions

Food can enhance the levels of valganciclovir in your body. To ensure maximal oral absorption, valganciclovir should be administered with or immediately after a meal. This will make it easier for your body to absorb the medication

Disease Interactions

VALGANCICLOVIR can interfere with: Bone Marrow Suppression, Acute Renal Failure, Acute Liver Failure
