Flutamide is an antiandrogen. It works in the body to prevent the actions of androgens (male hormones). Flutamide is used together with another hormone to treat prostate cancer. Flutamide blocks the effect of the natural male hormones on the growth of prostate cells. Flutamide also blocks the undesired effects of androgens in females such as excessive hair growth and acne. Flutamide belongs to a group of drugs called nonsteroidal antiandrogens. These work by blocking the effects of certain hormones to prevent growth or spread of cancer cells.

  •  Do not drive or operate machinery as flutamide can affect your nervous system and cause visual  changes.
  • Consult your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions: liver disease, a genetic enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, hemoglobin     M disease; habit of smoking.Seek immediate medical attention if you have severe or ongoing diarrhea.
  • Avoid dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt to prevent diarrhea and do not use laxatives while taking flutamide.
  • Drink plenty of liquids while you are on flutamide treatment.
  • You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to flutamide.
  • Flutamide should never be taken by a woman or a childAlthough flutamide is not for use by women, this medicine can cause birth defects if a woman is exposed to it during pregnancy.
  • Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
  • Flutamide is usually taken every 8 hours. Follow your doctor’s instructions.
  • Flutamide should never be taken by a woman or a child.
