Ethambutol is an antibiotic that prevents growth of the tuberculous bacteria in the body.It stops the growth of TB cells. Ethambutol is used with other medications to treat tuberculosis. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections. Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.

When treating active TB, isoniazid must be used with other TB medicines. Tuberculosis can become resistant to treatment if isoniazid is used alone.
