Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)

A fasting sugar test is a test that determines the amount of sugar, called glucose, in the blood after fasting for certain hours. It is the most commonly used test to diagnose diabetes.

Test procedure : The test procedure involves collecting a small amount of blood either from a finger or from a vein.

Test Instructions: Don’t eat or drink anything but water for eight hours before the test is scheduled. Most of the time, this means having the test done in the morning, before breakfast.

Levels of FBS : Fasting blood sugar more then 126 mg/dL is considered as diabetes.

Levels of PPBS: Post-prandial blood sugar (2 hours after taking food)more then 200 mg/dL is considered as diabetes.

In a healthy person, range of determining diabetes is:
FBS: 70-110 mg/dL
PPBS: 70-140 mg/dL

In pregnant women, the blood sugar range for diabetes is :
Prediabetic FBS : 100-125 mg/dL
Prediabetic PPBS : 140-199 mg/dL

Abnormal blood values for a 2-hour 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test are:
