Tinea Versicolor: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

In people with dark skin tones, pigmentary changes such as hypopigmentation (loss of color) are common, while in those with lighter skin color, hyperpigmentation (increase in skin color) are more common.
  • Severe itching in the affected areas
  • Dry and scaly spots
  • Spots growing slowly

Causes

The fungus that causes tinea versicolor can be found on healthy skin. It only starts causing problems when the fungus overgrows. A number of factors may trigger this growth, including:
  • Hot, humid weather
  • Excessive sweating
  • Oily skin
  • Hormonal changes
  • Weakened immune system
