Angioedema: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  • Swelling deep inside the skin normally at the affected organ or part.
  • Feeling hot and painful.
  • Sometimes itchy.
  • If it affects throat there will be difficulty in breathing.
  • If it affects eyes there will be problem in vision.
  • If it is hereditary, the symptoms are tummy pain, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting.
  • Swelling in bladder causes difficulty in passing urine.

Causes

Depending on the type of angioedema, the cause varies. In fact there might be no identifiable cause.
  • Allergic AE: is caused by animal dander, foods, insect bites, and exposure to water, sunlight, cold or heat.
  • Idiopathic AE: there is no cause but stress and infections trigger the swelling.
  • Drug induced AE: this is due to side-effect of medication.
  • Hereditary AE: this is due to faulty genes from your parents.
