Anal Fissure: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

The symptoms and signs include:
  • Anal pain
  • Pain when passing bowels and for some time afterwards
  • Bright red blood from the anus
  • Blood on the surface of stools
  • Blood smears on the toilet paper
  • A visible crack, tear(acute) or thick skin tag(chronic) in the anus or anal canal
  • Mucus discharge
  • Constipation or diarrhoea 

Causes

Fissures may be caused by passing large, hard stools, or by having diarrhoea for a long time. Other factors may include:
  • Decreased blood flow to the area in older adults
  • Too much tension in the sphincter muscles that control the anus
