Dengue Fever: Prevention and Complications

Prevention Tips

  • Dengue is a very serious disease and is the cause of illness in many of the individuals. Vaccine for dengue is still under development and thus the following preventive measures are to be taken in order to avoid mosquito bites.
  • Vector control should be implemented using environmental management and chemical methods by proper solid waste disposal, elimination of stagnant water in domestic environment and improved water storage practices.
  • As dengue is a mosquito borne infectious disease, the mosquito bites should be avoided by proper clothing (like long pants and long sleeves), using mosquito nets and mosquito repellents.
  • To reduce the mosquito population, get rid of places where mosquitoes can breed. These include old tires, cans, or flower pots that collect rain water. Regularly change the water in outdoor bird baths and pets water dishes.
  • Limiting exposure to mosquitoes by avoiding standing water and staying indoors two hours after sunrise and before sunset will help.
  • Aerosol and liquid spray has to be applied directly to the adult mosquito for effective killing, e.g. household pesticides.
  • Use Mosquito coil or electric mosquito bat/ liquid for mosquitoes.
  • Bodies should be protected from mosquito bite by applying insect repellent (containing DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus) on the clothes and exposed part of the body especially when you travel to Dengue Fever endemic areas.
  • Mosquito bednet should be used when the room is not air-conditioned.
