Symptoms

  • Sore throat
  • High temperature 38-39C (100.4-102.2F)
  • Sores or blisters may appear in or on the mouth and on the hands, feet, and sometimes the buttocks

Causes

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is usually caused by the Coxsackie a virus, but it can also be caused by the Enterovirus 71 or other types of Coxsackie viruses. The viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease can spread through:
  • Close personal contact
  • The air (through coughing or sneezing)
  • Contact with faeces
  • Contaminated objects and surfaces
