What is Tinea Versicolor?

Tinea versicolor also known as Pityriasis versicolor is a fungal infection of the skin, characterized by rash on the neck, chest, back, and arms. A yeast-like germ called malassezia (also called pityrosporum) commonly live on the skin, and do no harm.   However, some people are prone to this germ multiplying on their skin more than usual, which then leads to a rash.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is done by examining the skin or sometimes skin scrapings may be taken and observed under microscope. Other diagnostic tests include:

  • Lesions may fluoresce copper-orange when exposed to Woods lamp.
