Sciatica: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  • Back pain which is different from general back pain (it follows a path from your low back to your buttock and the back of your thigh). Pain even gets worse by sneezing, coughing or laughing (impulse pain), standing or sitting for a long period of time bending backwards.
  • Numbness (partial or total lack of sensation) and tingling (exciting by touching lightly) of your feet and legs.
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of reflexes
Lumbago symptoms 2

Causes

  • Slipped or herniated disc (breakdown of discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae).
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal with pressure on the nerves).
  • Spondylolisthesis (a condition in which one vertebra slips forward over another one).
  • Piriformis syndrome (a small muscle that lies deep in the buttocks, becomes tight or spasms, which can put pressure on and irritate the sciatic nerve).
  • Other minor causes include injury, infection or a tumour in the spine.
