Rhinitis: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  • Itching in the nose, roof of the mouth, throat, eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Congested or stuffy nose
  • Loss of smell
  • Runny nose
  • Tearing eyes
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Watery and red eyes
  • Face pain
If you have non-allergic rhinitis, your symptoms may be constant or may come and go through the year.

Causes

It is caused by chronic or acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose due to viruses, bacteria or irritants. 
The most common cause of rhinitis is cold. Other causes include
  • Allergic – Dust mites, animals, pollens, moulds, cockroaches
  • Infectious – Viruses
  • Non-allergic – Smoke, air pollution, exhaust fumes, aerosol sprays, fragrance, paint fumes, certain medications etc.
