Dysmenorrhea: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  • Throbbing pain in the lower abdomen (pain may be severe at times)
  • Feeling of pressure in the abdomen
  • Pain in the hips, lower back, and inner thighs
Some women also experience:
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loose stools
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness
  • General achiness

Causes

  • Primary Dysmenorrhoea usually occurs due to the increased activity of the hormone prostaglandin, which is responsible for the uterus contraction during menstruation 
  • Secondary Dysmenorrhea may be caused by a number of conditions, including:
  1. Fibroids  (benign tumours within the uterine wall)
  2. Adenomyosis, Endometriosis (gynaecological disorders)
  3. A sexually transmitted infection (STI)
  4. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID )( infection of the fallopian tubes)
  5. An ovarian cyst or tumour
  6. The use of an intrauterine device (IUD), a birth control method
