Pediatric Febrile Seizures: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

  • Fits
  • Fever (mild to severe)
  • Vomiting and foaming at the mouth
  • Rolling of the eyes
  • Loss of  consciousness
  • Shake or jerk the arms and legs on both sides of the body
  • The body will become stiff and the arms and legs will begin twitching
  • Irregular breathing

Causes

Any illness that causes a fever (high temperature) can cause a febrile seizure
  • Most occur with common illnesses such as ear infections and colds (viral or bacterial infections
  • Family history (parents with fits)
  • In rare cases, febrile seizures can occur after a child has a vaccination (post immunization)
