Myalgia: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

The most prominent among the myalgia symptoms 
  • Pain in the affected muscle
  • Muscle cramps
  • Joint pain
Cervical myalgia – heaviness of the head with intermittent headaches
Myalgia of heart muscles – one may suffer from irregular heartbeats. The bones become more prone to fractures. Impaired vision, swallowing and hearing can also be observed.
Myalgia of respiratory muscles – the patient may experience respiratory distress.
  • These were the usual viral myalgia symptoms. Other commonly seen symptoms of myalgia include skin burns and numbness or tingling sensation in the face, arms, legs or trunk.

Causes

The most common causes are:
  • Injury or trauma including sprains and strains
  • Overuse: using a muscle too much, too soon, too often
  • Tension or stress
  • Certain drugs
  • Electrolyte imbalances like too little potassium or calcium
  • Infections
  • Lupus (autoimmune diseases)
