Knee Pain: Prevention and Complications

Prevention Tips

  • Knee pain cannot always be avoided, but good precautions include stretching, warming up and cooling down around a workout or playing sport
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Resting after strenuous exercises may also help prevent pain in the knees
  • Do not smoke. Smoking slows healing because it decreases blood supply and delays tissue repair
  • Stop exercising if you feel pain in your knee

Watch Out

  • Swelling of the joint or the calf area
  • Bluish discoloration in the calf below the sore knee

When to See Doctor

Consult a doctor if you have
  • Severe knee pain and that you cannot bear weight on your knee
  • Fever, redness or warmth around the knee, or significant swelling
  • Pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, or bluish discoloration in the calf below the sore knee
