Keratoconjunjunctivitis: Meaning, Diagnosis and Overview

What is Keratoconjunjunctivitis?

Dry eye syndrome (DES) also called dry eye or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a common disorder of the tear film. This is a condition in which the membranes on the surface of the eye known as the conjunctiva become red and inflamed because of insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye.
Tears are a complex mixture of water, fatty oils, and mucus. This mixture helps make the surface of your eyes smooth and clear. With each blink of the eyelids, tears are spread across the front surface of the eye, known as the cornea and they provide lubrication and helps protect the eyes from infection.

Recovery Time

It may take three to six months to completely recover.

Diagnosis

Dry eyes can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination.
  • Patient medical history
  • External examination of the eye, including lid structure and blink dynamics
  • Evaluation of the eyelids and cornea using bright light and magnification
  • Measurement of the quantity and quality of tears for any abnormalities using special dyes
