GERD: Symptom and Causes

Symptoms

 Some people may experience all the symptoms while others notice only one or two. It usually varies from person to person
  • Heartburn (a burning sensation in the chest and/or throat)
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Dry cough and excessive salivation
  • Hoarseness and sore throat
  • Acid reflux
  • Lump in the throat
  • Bleeding (oesophageal ulcer)
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Erosion of teeth and gums
  • Difficulty breathing (asthma)
If these symptoms occur more than twice a week then you are said to have GERD

Causes

  • Hiatal hernia ( upper part of stomach bulges)
  • Obesity
  • Sphincter has low pressure
  • Pregnancy
  • Gastroparesis (condition in which the stomach takes too long to empty its contents)
  • Medications
  • Dietary and Lifestyle changes
