Prevention Tips

The best way to prevent ankle sprains is to maintain good strength, muscle balance and flexibility.
  • Warm-up before doing exercises and vigorous activities.
  • Wear appropriate shoes and avoid high heeled shoes.
  • Pay attention to your body warning signs to slow down when you feel pain or fatigue.
  • Consider ankle braces or tape, as directed by your physiotherapist.
  • Be careful when walking, running or working on an uneven surface.

When to See Doctor

Consult a doctor if  
  • You cannot walk
  • The pain does not get better after ice, rest, and pain medicine.
  • Your ankle does not feel better after 5 – 7 days.
  • Your ankle becomes increasingly discoloured (red or black and blue), or it becomes numb or tingly.
