Prevention Tips

  • Sleep at an altitude that is lower than the altitude you were at during the day.
  • Eat a lot of carbohydrate rich diet.
  • Rest, and drink plenty of liquids.
  • Climb the mountain gradually.
  • Intake of iron supplements if anemic.
  • Proper acclimatisation to altitudes of about 2,500m (acclimatisation-adaptation to a new climate, a new temperature or altitude or environment).

  • Ataxia (unable to walk straight)
  • Blue or gray lips or fingernails

When to See Doctor

  • Coughing of blood
  • Severe breathing problems
  • Convulsions (fits)
